Taniwha

Year 4's looked at shapes and patterns consistent with a wooden Taniwha.  They divided their page into 4 parts, the first section needed to be filled with the brows, the second was the eyes and nose, the third was the mouth and the final section had the arms.  We added patterning to the art work and applied brown dye to the face. Other colours were selected for the patterns and mouth.  Black vivd pen was used to highlight lines and thicker lines emphasised the nose, mouth and eyes.

Lighthouse bags

Year 4 students drew and painted lighthouses.  They were covered with varnish at the end and glued onto A3 paper bags to display.  The bags give the artwork an 3D effect.

Tin foil Owls

Year 4 students worked this term on a artwork which involved learning how to draw an owl and the process of using tin foil.

Once the preliminary sketches had been completed the students enlarged their owls onto cardboard in pencil.  They used PVA thick glue to cover the lines and this was left to dry.  

The next session involved placing glue all over the cardboard and carefully placing a piece of tin foil over the top.  They then used a cotton bud to carefully push the tin foil down around the  PVA glue.

The next step was to use a blunt pencil and add patterns to all spaces.  Once this was done we added shoe polish.  The application  of the shoe polish was easy but determining the right timing to wipe it off was more difficult.

I decided to have the students use felt pens to add some colour on the leaves, bark , eyes of the owl and beak.

Fish

Year 4 Fish 
These wonderful fish were constructed out of corrugated cardboard.  We sketched many different fish shapes and decided on the one we liked.  The children re drew the fish onto the cardboard and cut it out.
I then demonstrated how to apply a texture paste to their fish and spread it around with a knife.  Once it was in place they used the back of a plastic teaspoon to indent the paste to make scales.  We also use a toothpick to make lines in the tail or fins.
Once that had dried we selected colours for our tropical fish.  This took 2 or 3 different colours and I showed them how to load their brush with two colours and 'double dip'.
They added black paint for any detailing including the eye.  I sprayed them with varnish to give them a shine.

Pop Art Hearts:
Leading on from the clay hearts, I decided to look at Pop art and use the simple shape that we had previously used.  We all worked on using 5 or 6 heart shapes, cutting them out from fluro paper. They were then glued onto black paper and added onto their background. We looked at different examples of using white paper to show reflection and movement.  Children experimented with these.
In the second piece of work they had to decide on a simple shape and again show reflection and movement.

Record Clocks:
These clocks were made out of old records.  Children planned and designed their own theme.  We covered the clocks with white paint and the students penciled the design onto them.  Thick acrylic paint was used and two coats were needed.  Once complete they outlined their work and I sprayed them with varnish.  To complete the clocks the students added number stickers and the clock mechanism which fitted perfectly.

Hearts:

These hearts were made by the Year 4's, after we had looked at lines and patterns.    Air dried clay was used and  once they were dry we gave them one coat of white, then selected a main colour for our hearts.  
Finally we penciled on our line designs and inked them with vivid pen.  I glued these onto firm cardboard.

Poppies:





Year 4 students learnt how to use different paint textures for their poppies.  We used a variety of materials- 
-glad wrap was placed on wet paint and crinkled up, removed and allowed to dry.
- Bubble wrap was also pressed onto another red painted sheet.
- A scraper was used to make designs in the paint.

When all these were dry we used them to cut out our flower shapes. We completed the inside flower with a black button.

Shoes
Year 4 students began this session by discussing and sketching a sports shoe.

As we were only going to have one leg in our finished piece, they had to decided on the clothing and how to make the composition interesting to the viewer.  The students used coloured paper for the clothing and dye with ink on the shoes.
